ANTI DIVA: THE CAROLE POPE CONFESSIONS
IN POST

Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions is a bold, intimate, and darkly funny portrait of Carole Pope—Canada’s original queer rock icon, a taboo-shattering provocateur whose voice once echoed across radios, TV screens, and underground clubs and impressed David Bowie enough to be invited as his opener on his biggest world tour. At the height of her fame in the late 1970s and early ’80s, Carole Pope fronted the audacious art-rock band Rough Trade, delivering sexually charged, genre-defying anthems that challenged gender norms, thrilled queer audiences, and scandalized the mainstream. Their breakout hit “High School Confidential” was a rare thing: a Top 40 single about lesbian lust—played in broad daylight on AM radio. With lyrics that made censors squirm and teenage girls feel seen, Pope’s unapologetic presence was decades ahead of its time. Her records have gone platinum and she’s won multiple Junos, and yet, her refusal to compromise—artistically, sexually, or commercially—came at a cost. Told through a mix of present-day vérité, candid interviews, never-before-seen archival footage, and blistering live performances, Antidiva is more than a music documentary. It’s a story of reinvention, resilience, and the complex cost of being a trailblazer. The film follows Pope now in her 70s—still touring, still writing, still hustling—navigating an industry that worships youth and rarely makes room for queer women who refuse to play by the rules. Her fierce independence and sharp tongue remain intact, but behind the bravado is an artist reflecting on her legacy, her loves, and the ongoing fight to be heard. Anchored by her lifelong creative partnership with Kevan Staples—her former bandmate and ex-lover—the documentary explores the deep emotional and artistic bond that fueled Rough Trade’s singular sound. Their relationship, equal parts romantic and collaborative, weathered heartbreak, reinvention, and the grind of the road, ultimately maturing into an enduring chosen family. The film also delves into Pope’s high-voltage romance with the legendary Dusty Springfield, shedding light on the quiet ache of loving someone who could not publicly love you back. It’s a window into the cost of the closet and the burden of being visible in a world that only recently started catching up. Featuring interviews with k.d. lang, Peaches, Rufus Wainwright, Peaches, Jann Arden, Sebastian Bach, Nona Hendrix, Jeanne Beker, and more, Antidiva contextualizes Pope’s place in queer and Canadian cultural history. As artists who followed in her footsteps reflect on her impact, a clear picture emerges: Carole Pope was not just ahead of her time—she cracked the door open for others to walk through. At its core, Antidiva is a love letter to the power of defiance. It’s a celebration of queer joy and survival, of making art outside the margins and refusing to fade quietly. Pope’s story is not one of nostalgia—it’s one of urgent relevance. In an era where queer and feminist voices are still policed, Pope’s enduring refusal to be silenced feels as necessary as ever. Unvarnished, sexy, and unrepentant, Antidiva reclaims Carole Pope’s place in music history—not as a footnote, but as a godmother of punk glam, queer pride, and radical authenticity.
