ANTI DIVA: THE CAROLE POPE CONFESSIONS
IN PRODUCTION
Carole Pope is a queer icon and rock outlaw who was a beacon of freedom, feminism and gay liberation at a time before it was safe or cool. During the 70s and 80s, her band Rough Trade made platinum-selling records and opened for David Bowie and Roxy Music. From their avant-garde album covers to their slavish attention to outré fashion, hair and makeup, Carole Pope and Rough Trade were impossible to ignore... The perspective of a person who bore witness to the extraordinary changes of the last 50 years - as both a woman and a lesbian - is and will be incredibly important to the generations to follow. Carole has had an even bigger impact on younger female vocalists who cite her cabaret-style vocal stylings and frank lyrical language (“makes me cream my jeans when she comes my way”) as a gateway and opening for them to pursue their own musical dreams. Artists like k.d. Lang, Peaches and Rufus Wainwright have expressed their love and admiration for her, thanking her for emboldening their own queerness. Up-and-comer NYSSA is currently writing music with Carole - an idol 50 years her senior! Despite all of the acclaim and fame, Carole is now 78 years-old, single, child-free, and facing the challenges that many queer elders do in their sunset years: no children or close family, no partner, and financial insecurity. How will she navigate her third act?
Popular nonbinary comedian Mae Martin explores the science of gender and sexual fluidity.
